LEA CROWLEY
Lea Crowley is a New York City based artist. She is currently a senior at Oberlin College pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Studio Art, with a minor in Art History. Crowley primarily works with oil paint and ink, intersecting between landscape and figurative subject matter.
Much of her practice has been considerably traditional, with an emphasis on hatching and oil painting techniques. However she pushes to create interpretations of spaces she holds close; through the use of alternative images she takes or find within her fathers photography that strike a sense of familiarity to her childhood. These images push to reflect visual themes of nostalgia and reminiscence.
In developing her relationship to her Asian identity while in school, she has felt hyperaware of the spaces she takes up. Painting allows her to create spaces that feel neutral to the viewer but equally allow them to feel a sense of interpersonal relation to the image– ultimately creating a visual that is not tied to any tensions, but can function personally to her. Using the contrast between mundane spaces, such as houses and windows, and the natural world, in conjunction with vibrant coloration, allows her to manipulate her work and feel control over what she renders.
